The Hula
.The Hula is the heart of Hawaii and it is expressed in movement. No one knows how it originated but it is said the hula was first performed by Gods and Goddesses.
The Hula began as a sign of worship and was used regularly in ceremonies but it progressively became entertainment.
Every motion and expression of the performer’s hands in the hula has a special meaning, like a shark or a palm tree.
Traditionally the Hula dancers wear a lei on their head, a lei around their neck, a skirt made of tapa (pau) and anklets made out of whale bone or dog teeth.
Ancient Hula schools were very strict and lots of things were forbidden like, cutting their nails, cutting their hair and many other things.
In the 19th century the Hula almost disappeared because priests and missionaries thought it was wicked, disgusting, worthless and offensive but during the late 1800’s King Kalakaua (to read more about King Kalakaua go to the Hawaiian Monarchy page) saved the Hula when he formed his own little army and encouraged them to learn the old hula.
Today the Hula is taught all over Hawaii and the world.
They teach everyone young and old alike.
